5 Project Village 2: The Elele Mini-Estates

Section I: The Project Area: A Brief Description of the Impact of Crude Petroleum Exploration on Peasants’ Agriculture

This second project village is one of the many villages in the project area that have been severely affected by crude oil exploration. Because of its location at the centre of the largest deposit of crude petroleum, the community has struggled to survive the encroaching tenacity of oil multinationals. The Elele community spread over into the Igbo farming areas of Oguta, Obirikom and Izombe. In 1984, a pilot study of these villages by this author revealed the extent of economic devastation which had been brought upon these communities since the start of crude exploration in the early 1970s (Badru, 1984). These villages rely on trade exchange involving food items produced by peasants at Elele, and fish farming by peasants at Oguta, Obirikom and Izombe. Since the intensification of crude exploitation in the area, the economy of these communities have been brought to a virtual standstill. In the following pages we describe the sort of economic misfortunes that have been visited on the villagers by crude oil multinationals. Indeed, the destruction of peasant production by crude exploration made this area a target for the World Bank assisted agricultural projects (ADPs).
